2020 Riesling Zilliken

2020 Riesling Zilliken

2020 Riesling Zilliken, Saar (Mosel), Germany. Did you already have a Riesling truly enchant you? Today I had that experience with this wine from Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken. This was a second time with this wine, the first time was at the winery a few months ago.

The Winemaking

It struck me that the wines ferment in old large barrels, not in stainless steel tanks. Few wineries do this. Allowing a little bit of micro oxidation avoids reductive notes in the nose. Furthermore, this ads to the complexity of the wine. It also adds to the complexity (and costs) of the winemaking. The old barrels are stored in two underground stories, below the building of the winery. The barrels do not give any wooden aromas to the wine. The inside is covered with cristals of tartaric acid, so that the wine doesn’t really touch the wood. Even if it did, the barrels are so old that any aromas of the oak will have vanished and washed out.

The Wine

A straw colored wine. You take a sniff and are almost overwhelmed with those complex and delicious aromas that are so typical for a Riesling that shows first signs of maturity. You sense grapefruit, apricot, peach, and this lovely petrol note of Riesling with some maturity. Very nice, and makes you long for the first sip. On the palate, the 2020 Riesling Zilliken is semi-sweet, but its expressive acidity lets you think that you have a wine with a lot less residual sugar in your mouth. Light on alcohol, only 9%, with medium body. The acidity and the residual sugar play with each other in your mouth – and you don’t care who wins. A lovely experience, only Riesling does this in this perfection. This wine is truly delicious, and enchanting. TBM 93 points.

2021 Riesling “R” Kabinett

2021 Riesling "R" Kabinett

2021 Riesling “R” Kabinett, August Kesseler, Rheingau, Germany. Kesseler is a vintner of high renown in the region of the Rhine valley, producing Riesling and Pinot Noir. This Kabinett is a typical “Kabi”, it appears semisweet due to the rather high level of acidity, even though it has 30 gr residual sugar and one would think this is “sweet”.

The 2021 Riesling “R” Kabinett is a very pleasant, easy-drinking wine (the French would call it a “Glou Glou”). Refreshing, light. Great drinking pleasure. Straw color. In the nose, white and yellow fruit – lemon, apple, pear, white peach. Nice mineral notes (firestone). On the palate, the wine comes across as semisweet, with high and refreshing but pleasant acidity that really compensates much of the residual sugar. Reasonably long finish. Great wine that comes at a very reasonable price. TBM 89 points.

2012 Riesling von der Fels trocken

2012 Riesling von der Fels trocken

The 2012 Riesling von der Fels trocken is a dry Riesling from Rheinhessen. Klaus-Peter Keller is a famous winemaker of Riesling in Germany. His G Max is legendary, his GG’s are very hard to find. I was able to find his premium entry level wine “von der Fels”, and it was a bit of a sobering experience. A good Riesling, but I have had better ones at this level from other producers. The myth was demystified.

I tasted the 2012 Riesling von der Fels trocken, Keller, Rheinhessen, Germany. Clear appearance, with a golden straw color. In the nose, complex and full aromas typical for a mature Riesling – stone fruit like peach and apricot, citric notes, and a beautiful note of petrol. On the palate, the wine is almost dry, with a nice freshness and good body. Long and pleasant finish. TBM 89 points.

2006 Altenberg Alte Reben

2006 Altenberg Alte Reben Riesling

2006 Altenberg Alte Reben is a Riesling from the Van Volxem winery in the Saar region. Saar is part of the Mosel appellation (formerly Mosel-Saar-Ruwer). The original Van Volxem winery in Wiltingen dates back to a Roman villa complex. Originally, the Romans planted the vineyards, back in the 3rd century. They are among the best slate sites of the Saar with the oldest steep slopes. Following a period when it was the winery of a monastery under the Jesuit order in the 17th century, Van Volxem, a Belgian brewer, took over the propoerty. In 2000, the current owner Roman Niewodniczanski purchased the winery, and greatly improved the quality.

What better wine to have on International Riesling Day than a great Riesling? Look at this color!! Amber, golden. In the nose, you are overwhelmed by gorgeous and complex aromas that are typical for an aged Riesling: peach, apricot, honey, caramel… and notes of safrinha. On the palate, the wine is off-dry, with medium plus acidity, very round mouthfeel, long finish… consequently, asking for the next sip of this outstanding Riesling!

For those who love really dry Rieslings, the 2006 Altenberg Alte Reben is perhaps not for you. In the early 2000’s, Van Volxem liked to make the wines with quite a bit of residual sugar. Roman Niewodniczanski changed this, and younger Rieslings from Van Volxem are even more spectacular.

2020 Riesling trocken

2020 Riesling trocken

2020 Riesling trocken of Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is a dry white wine from the Palatinate, Germany. The Gault Millau guide dubbed the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf winery the “king of dry Riesling”, because this is truly their specialty. They excel in this category. A traditional winery in Wachenheim, with Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze at the helm. She introduced biodynamic principles many years ago, and was one of the very first German wineries to do so. It also was the first winery to become a member of the French association Biodyvin. The estate has around 80 hectares, with several vineyards being classified as Erste Lage or Grosse Lage by the VDP. Wines from these parcels could certainly be sold as Premier Cru or Grand Cru wines, if they wanted to. But they take pride in only using the very best grapes of the classified parcels for the Premier Cru or Grand Cru, whereas they use the remainder to make wines at the village (Ortswein) or Gutswein level. This 2020 Riesling trocken is the “business card” of the winery, their basic Riesling. Thus, a Gutswein which truly shows the excellence of the winery. And that with a very reasonable price tag. Available in Brazil at Primeur Vinhos.

The colour is light straw. In the nose, you have notes of citric fruit, green apple, pear and quince. There is a slight mineral touch. On the palate, the wine is dry, fresh, mineral, and the fruit showing a true Riesling. Highly recommended.

2015 Erbacher Steinmorgen Erste Lage

2015 Erbacher Steinmorgen Erste Lage

2015 Erbacher Steinmorgen Erste Lage, Baron Knyphausen. This is truly a Premier Cru from the Rheingau region. The Baron Knyphausen family took over the winery in 1818. The winery was originally founded by the monks of the Eberbach cloister, in 1141. Frederik Baron Knyphausen is now at the helm of the family business. He is working on constantly improving the quality, and for two years now, the winery is in conversion to organic viticulture and winemaking.

Straw colour. In the nose, complex aromas of citric fruit, hints of peach. Petrol notes, typical for a somewhat matured Riesling. On the palate, the wine is dry (1.6 g residual sugar), with a crispy acidity – and yet the wine has a round and velvety mouthfeel. Very long finish. The 2015 Erbacher Steinmorgen Erste Lage is really a wonderful Riesling.

2020 Ungeheuer GG Von Winning

2020 Von Winning Ungeheuer GG

The 2020 Ungeheuer GG Von Winning is a Riesling at the GG (Grosses Gewächs, Grand Cru) level within the VDP classification. Forst is the village in the Palatinate with the highest density of “Grosse Lage” vineyards, and the Forster Ungeheuer comprises undoubtedly some of the best German vineyards for Riesling. Some of its most famous winelovers include Otto von Bismarck and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (who said that “life is too short to drink bad wine”). In a play of words, Bismarck once said that the “Ungeheuer ist ungeheur gut” (the “Monster is unbelievably good”). Tasted at the Gerstl fall tasting in Sempach.

The wine presents itself in straw colour. In the nose, Riesling aromas prevail – yellow fruit, citrus aromas, some flowery notes and herbs. The wine is dry (though not “bone dry”, it has 6.4 gr/l residual sugar) with medium acidity (7.2 gr/l), nice minerality, and gives a great mouthfeel and a long finish. This wine has great potential, it is still young and should be left developing for a few years.

2021 WinWin Riesling Von Winning

2021 Win Win Riesling von Winning

The 2021 WinWin Riesling Von Winning is a very nice wine from the basic “Gutswein” level (in the VDP classification), from the region of Palatinate, Germany. The team of Stefan Altmann follows traditional winemaking styles, fermentation in large wooden barrels without cooling. The WinWin is fermented partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in barrels. The grapes come from vineyards in Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg. Tasted at the Gerstl tasting in Sempach.

This wine shows a straw colour. In the nose, some typical Riesling aromas – apple and citrus fruit dominating. No petrol notes yet, as the wine is very young. On the palate, the wine has a bit of residual sugar (8,7 gr/l) which is nicely balanced by the acidity (8,3 gr/l) of the wine. Due the interaction between acidity and residual sugar makes the wine appear almost dry. This wine gives a pleasant, round mouthfeel and has a long finish. Beautiful young Riesling.

2021 Ostara Weingut Weedenborn

2021 Weedenborn Ostara Cuvée

The 2021 Ostara Weingut Weedenborn is a white wine made from a blend of different grapes: 50% Pinot Blanc, 25% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Riesling. Enologist Gesine Roll created this fresh wine from terroirs of Rheinhessen. Strangely enough the wine cannot be found on their website. I tasted it at the Gerstl tasting in Sempach. Gerstl called it a top cuvée and “the white wine of the year 2022”!

Straw colour. In the nose, the typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas are dominant at first – Passion fruit, especially. Then, there is also yellow fruit (grapefruit, lemon) and flowery notes. On the palate, the wine is dry, slightly acidic with a reasonable finish. Not sure what made Gerstl consider this wine to be so extraordinary.

2020 Escherndorfer Lump Scheurebe

2020 Escherndorfer Lump Scheurebe Spätlese

2020 Escherndorfer Lump Scheurebe Spätlese is an off-dry/sweet white wine, made by Horst Sauer in Franconia, Germany. The Escherndorfer Lump is a vineyard with steep slopes, which have up to 75% inclination. It is classified as Erste Lage in the VDP classification. The soil consists of shell limestone, with Southern exposure. This terroir helps producing wines of intense fruit and good minerality. The wine has around 19,5 gr residual sugar, with 7,6 gr acidity. It comes in the Bocksbeutel bottle, which is typical for Franconia. Tasted at the Gerstl Tasting in Sempach.

The wine has a straw colour, with slight greenish reflexes. In the nose, aromas of yellow fruit and citrus prevail, combined with some light mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is slightly sweet / off dry, with medium acidity and a round mouthfeel. The finish is reasonably long. All in all, the 2020 Escherndorfer Lump Scheurebe Spätlese is a good wine.
